1 引言

2007年我國教育部頒發的《聾校義務教育課程設置實驗方案》規定,聾校外語課的課程性質為選修課程,開課年級為7年級,鼓勵學校根據實際情況積極開設外語課。事實上,教育及經濟較發達地區的很多聾校已經嘗試開設英語課,盡管具體開課年級有所不同。但是,聾生聽覺通道受阻的事實,給聾生英語學習及聾校英語教學帶來很大挑戰。通過檢索相關文獻,發現我國對聾生英語教學較為關注的群體多來自于九年制特殊教育學校及高中、高校的聾生英語學科教師,他們從自身工作經驗出發,總結了一些英語詞匯教學、語法教學的策略。這些研究成果,客觀反映了我國聾校英語學科的教學現狀,體現了教師的自發探究,飽含責任與敬業精神。但是,其不足也顯而易見。由于缺乏多學科人員,尤其是語言學、心理學及聾教育專家的合作,研究視角比較單一,研究成果的理論性、創新性不足。進一步檢索國外有關研究,發現研究成果主要集中在語音編碼與閱讀能力、語音編碼與編碼意識等領域。研究對聾生是否存在語音編碼的結論并不一致,有研究表明聾生存在語音編碼,也有研究表明聾生不存在語音編碼。本研究試圖在借鑒國內外相關研究成果的基礎上,探討全聾學生英語詞匯學習的有效策略。本研究基于個案詞匯默寫錯誤類型的分析,設計并實施干預策略,通過個案前后成績的對比,來檢測干預策略對全聾學生詞匯學習的效果,進而探討全聾學生是否存在語音編碼或其他語言編碼形式。

2 研究方法

2.1 研究對象

胡某,女,14歲,九年一貫制聾校6年級學生,純音聽力檢測報告為左耳平均聽力超過110分貝,右耳100分貝。根據中國聽力殘疾分級標準,該生屬于一級聽力殘疾,程度為極重度。

該生在學前教育階段接受過聾教育雙語實驗項目培訓,有較好的手語溝通水平。經過與其所在班級班主任老師的交談,了解到該生為住宿生,生活獨立且有良好學習習慣,同伴關系良好,語文、數學成績在班級均名列前茅。英語成績中等偏下,盡管學習很努力,但效果不佳。

胡某所在聾校自六年級開始開設英語課,選用教材為江蘇譯林版牛津小學英語三年級教材,授課教師有英語專業大專學歷,但沒有特殊教育專業背景。學校為教師提供過短期崗前培訓,教師具備一定的手語溝通能力。根據英語學科要求及聾生英語學習的特點,該校英語教研室規定六年級英語單詞教學的目標是會認、會寫,這意味著學生要掌握全部所學單詞的字義和字形,既能夠識別單詞,也能夠默寫單詞。

2.2 研究過程

2.2.1 評估

筆者接觸個案的時間是六年級下學期開學初,上學期該生英語課一共學習了101個單詞(筆者為了統計方便,剔除了其中的The Great Wall,以其余100個單詞為例)。通過對個案英語課堂學習的觀察,單元練習手冊、試卷、作業本的分析,以及與授課教師的交談,筆者了解到該生在英語詞匯學習中的主要困難表現在單詞默寫方面,常常是記不住,記不牢,再現不準確,模模糊糊,似是而非。為準確掌握個案的單詞學習情況,筆者根據英語學科對詞匯學習的目標要求設計了“識別、默寫”兩種水平的試卷,分四次對其已學習過的100個單詞進行了隨機檢測。個案在兩種測試水平的得分分別是97分和68分,這表明她對學過的單詞在識別水平上掌握很好,但是默寫情況并不理想,只能準確默寫68個單詞,不能達到教學目標的要求。

對上面表中個案拼寫錯誤的32個單詞做進一步分析,發現個案單詞默寫的錯誤類型主要是:(1)字母序列問題:個案能夠默寫出構成單詞的所有字母,但是字母的排列順序不正確,以一種健聽人幾乎無法理解的錯誤序列拼寫出來,如riado、kifine、wthie、firdge。(2)增、減字母問題:個案能夠拼寫出構成單詞的大部分字母,但是存在增加或遺漏字母的錯誤,如browon、shir、shool bag、T-shir、ice、toy、yello。(3)字母序列和增、減字母錯誤的組合:這種拼寫錯誤出現次數最多,如bo,rybook、tiehgr、swenates、shki、jaes、cupmane、mike、danguter等,這些單詞不僅字母的拼寫序列錯誤,同時存在增加或減少字母的情況。(4)詞義干擾問題:如個案把“時鐘(clock)”拼寫為“時間(time)”,這種錯誤盡管并不多見,但依然存在,這與聾生對抽象詞匯及概念的理解程度有關。

個案的單詞拼寫錯誤表明其不能有效利用語音編碼識記單詞,這與部分研究結論一致。個案單詞拼寫中常常出現的字母序列問題,如增加、減少字母問題,也反映了聾生單詞掌握水平較低,記憶表象模糊,不能準確再現,這與已有一線教師的研究描述相吻合。因而,在某種程度上,本研究選擇的個案,反映了大多數聾生,尤其是全聾學生單詞學習的普遍性問題,具有一定的典型性和代表性。

2.2.2 目標

通過單詞復習策略的干預,提高個案的單詞默寫準確率,鞏固已學過單詞,為其英語學習打下堅實的詞匯基礎。探索個案可能存在的非語音編碼問題,包括如下問題:是否存在非語音編碼?這種非語音編碼是什么?可利用程度和效果如何?

2.2.3 干預過程

研究者與個案英語授課教師經過協商,決定在每周英語課課前對其進行單詞復習策略的干預,內容為六年級上冊學過的100個單詞,每次持續時間為5~7分鐘。要求個案觀看一組研究者設計好的幻燈片課件,一邊看一邊按課件中的指導語完成習題。課件以預設好的速度自動播放,播放結束后,收集該生的答題紙以了解干預過程中個案的成績情況。為控制無關變量的影響,要求該生不需自行復習上學期已經學過的單詞,在課堂教學中也不再額外復習。

經過5周10次課,十組幻燈片課件的復習干預全部完成。為了測查是否取得了預期效果,四周后,研究者同樣以“識別、默寫”兩種水平的試卷,分兩次對個案進行了復測,并對成績加以記錄和分析,進而探討干預策略的有效性。

2.2.4 干預內容及策略

干預所使用的材料為研究者自行設計的十組幻燈片課件,每組課件的內容與教材對應單元的學習內容一致。如第一組課件與教材第一單元“animals”的8個單詞對應一致,依此類推。干預策略的實施步驟共分六個環節,分別是:①復習(喚醒記憶)、②識別(排除干擾)、③再現(鞏固)、④補全字母(提供變式,增加難度)、⑤再現(鞏固)、⑥默寫(目標行為)。隨機選取每個環節的幻燈片幻燈片一張,組合起來可以了解干預策略的全過程(示意圖如下)。環節①:個案一邊觀看一邊回憶,以喚醒頭腦中的已有記憶。環節②:學生在短時記憶的幫助下,容易做出正確選擇,進而掌握字義。環節③:給學生及時自我評價的機會,讓學生體驗到成就感。環節④:提供了較高難度的練習變式,該環節是根據學生默寫中常常遺漏字母的錯誤以及單詞字母組合規律來設計的,以幫助學生克服困難,掌握規律。環節⑤:再次呈現正確答案,加深鞏固,并且不再呈現直觀圖片,目的是讓學生深入理解并建立中英文抽象文字符合間的對應關系。環節⑥:是學生要掌握的目標行為,經過前五個環節的反復練習和鞏固,由短時記憶向長時記憶轉化,學生默寫單詞的正確率大大提高。

值得特別說明的是,在①、④、⑤環節中,研究者經反復嘗試,在自定義動畫中將單詞的呈現方式設定為“揮舞”,即組成單詞的每個字母可依次自上而下跳動呈現。這種呈現方式既利用了聾生的注意規律,學生易于在靜態背景中捕捉到動態的信息內容,又能使學生清楚感知到單詞字母的序列性,以克服默寫中常常出現的字母前后順序顛倒的問題。學生能按字母跳動出現的順序打出手指語,學生用手指語書寫單詞的行為與視覺感知字母動態序列呈現的心理過程同時發生,兩種行為緊密聯系在一起。

干預設計的另一個特點是直觀形象的圖片信息與抽象文字緊密結合,能夠幫助學生建立對抽象語言符號的意義理解和記憶線索。

此外,干預活動過程中發揮了指導語對個案行為的指導作用。六個環節不同活動內容轉換時幻燈片會自動呈現簡短指導語,如“我們復習一組animals的單詞,看看你還記得嗎”;再如“休息一下,看看你都選對了嗎”等等。這樣,學生能夠清楚知道接下來要做什么,是需要高度集中注意力,是做題,還是自我確認答案等等。

最后,干預設計保證了學生的主體地位。干預過程中,個案一直處于主動積極的學習狀態。松弛有度,“小步子、多循環”的設計給學生提供了充分練習和自我評價的機會,學生體驗到了“跳一跳,能夠摘到蘋果”的樂趣。

3 結果與分析

3.1 個案的成績水平

經過干預,個案單詞學習的兩種水平,尤其是默寫水平取得了明顯進步。這表明復習策略對提升個案的成績水平具有積極意義。個案的單詞識別水平由97分提高到100分,默寫水平由68分提高到95分,這說明個案在較難的單詞默寫環節取得了明顯進步,達成了本研究的目標之一。回顧干預過程,個案在總計70分鐘的干預過程中,默寫成績提高了27分,說明干預具有針對性,成效顯著。

3.2 個案在干預過程中的表現

干預過程中的觀察及錄像資料分析表明,個案在觀看幻燈片課件的過程中,易于被圖文并茂的幻燈片所吸引,表現出濃厚的學習興趣,眼神專注,會不由自主伴隨字母動態序列呈現的次序打出手指語,在“②識別一排除干擾”、“④補全字母一提供變式”兩個環節的練習中,積極主動,在③和⑤“再現一鞏固”環節呈現正確答案時,會迫不及待搶先用手指語打出答案,成就感溢于言表。經過前面五個環節的反復練習和強化,在最后“⑥默寫單詞環節”,教學目標的達成水到渠成(見圖2)。本研究設計的干預策略,有效避免了以往單純依靠機械記憶帶來的枯燥感和挫折感,利用注意規律和認知特點抓住學生的注意力,提供了準確清晰的語言編碼和表象編碼,循序漸進,反復練習幫助學生把短時記憶轉化為長時記憶,進而讓學生體驗了到學習的樂趣,維護了學生的自信心。

3.3 來自教師的反饋

教師對干預結果非常滿意,沒想到個案會取得這么大的進步,并對單詞動態序列呈現的設計非常感興趣。這種方式可能有助于失去語音編碼的全聾學生建立清楚深刻的視覺表象編碼,進而與字詞形式的語言編碼和手指語編碼等相結合,經過反復練習,這種綜合的語言編碼形式得以鞏固。這個特點體現了本研究策略干預的創新之處,既綜合了以往研究中所強調的一般性策略,如“游戲法”“直觀法”,滲透構詞規律,培養興趣等等,又突出了全聾學生的認知特點,符合學習規律、記憶規律,因而個案干預成效明顯。

4 討論

4.1 單詞字母動態序列呈現對全聾學生建立非語音編碼的探索

已有研究表明,全聾學生很難利用語音編碼來識記單詞。個案聽力損失程度為一級,全聾,分析其單詞默寫的錯誤,如把單詞“shirt”“shirt”“iacket”“sweater”分別默寫為“skir”“shki”“iaes”“swenates”,從中可以看出,其默寫錯誤的類型與聽力正常學生有明顯區別,顯示出不能借助語音編碼來識記單詞的特征。那么要學習富有語音表征特點的英語詞匯,全聾學生該借助哪種或哪幾種語言編碼形式來幫助其識記呢?或者如何發展形成聾生自己擅長的語言編碼策略呢?類似探索對聾生英語教學無疑具有指導價值。本研究表明,全聾學生借助視覺表象編碼,尤其是動態序列呈現的字母,輔以手指語編碼的一一對應,能幫助其有效掌握詞匯。但是,聾生視覺捕捉動態序列呈現的字母時,如何與伴隨的手指語書寫動作建立內在的聯系?大腦在這一過程中的反應機制如何?并且這種聯系是否是全聾學生識記單詞的最有效策略?以上問題受限于研究方法的局限性,缺乏技術手段的有效監測等,還不能做出準確回答。但是,對這些問題的思考和深入探索,兼具理論價值和應用價值,值得引起廣大學者的關注。

4.2 研究的局限性

本研究設計的復習策略,易于為一線教師借用和掌握,具有靈活的應用價值。70分鐘的干預總時長,學生單詞默寫成績由68分提高至95分,經驗表明,這是令人滿意的結果。未來研究中,如能設計對照組,延長研究周期,擴大研究取樣,取得更多數據,則有助于證實干預策略的有效性、針對性和適應性。
