1.cet考試與大學(xué)英語教學(xué)的關(guān)系
大學(xué)英語四、六級考試與大學(xué)公共英語教學(xué)的關(guān)系越來越密切,后者受前者的影響越來越大。自1987年推行四、六級考試以來,越來越多的大學(xué)更加重視公共英語教學(xué),公共英語教師的地位和待遇都有了顯著的提高,公共英語教學(xué)條件得到了充實和改善,大學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí)英語的積極性和自覺性空前高漲,公共英語教學(xué)質(zhì)量在一定程度上得到了提高。
目前大學(xué)英語教學(xué)《大綱》在教學(xué)應(yīng)注意的幾個問題別提到了教學(xué)和測試的關(guān)系問題:“測試是貫徹執(zhí)行教學(xué)大綱的重要保證。科學(xué)的測試結(jié)果可以為教學(xué)提供量化的反饋,幫助教師了解教學(xué)效果,改進教學(xué)方法,提高教學(xué)質(zhì)量;還可以幫助學(xué)生了解自己的學(xué)習(xí)情況,改進學(xué)習(xí)方法。因此,測試應(yīng)以大綱要求和教學(xué)內(nèi)容為基本依據(jù)。教學(xué)中,應(yīng)注重學(xué)生實際語言能力的培養(yǎng);測試中,更看重考核語言基礎(chǔ)和語言應(yīng)用能力,要采用一定比例的主觀試題。務(wù)必防止應(yīng)試教學(xué)傾向。”①可以看出,在教學(xué)和測試兩者的關(guān)系中,教學(xué)是第一性的,測試是為教學(xué)服務(wù)的。cet考試和大學(xué)英語教學(xué)兩者是手段和目的的關(guān)系。兩者相互促進、相互制約,是辯證統(tǒng)一的關(guān)系。改革教學(xué)方式、注重能力培養(yǎng)與四、六級考試并不是矛盾的,而是相輔相成、相互促進的。
2.cet中新題型增設(shè)的背景和意義
我國高校英語教學(xué)中存在著錯誤的考教理念,造成了cet測試和大學(xué)英語教學(xué)關(guān)系的異化。
2.1絕大多數(shù)大學(xué)英語教師把四、六級考試作為大學(xué)公共英語教學(xué)的“指揮棒”,倒置考試和測試的關(guān)系,使教學(xué)圍著考試轉(zhuǎn)。受“指揮棒”理念的影響,大學(xué)公共英語教學(xué)越來越偏離自身的目標(biāo),而成為達(dá)到四、六級考試目的的手段,成為一種“應(yīng)試教學(xué)”。為了應(yīng)付四、六級考試,有的學(xué)校不惜打亂正常的教學(xué)計劃,將本該一、二年級開設(shè)的課程推遲到三四年級開設(shè),有的根據(jù)四、六級考試要求調(diào)整英語課程設(shè)置,有的大辦四、六級考試輔導(dǎo)班,有的利用寒暑假組織學(xué)生集中“攻關(guān)”,有的發(fā)動教師研究四、六級考試“規(guī)律”,放任教師拋開原定教材,以四、六級考試大綱和有關(guān)輔導(dǎo)材料為依據(jù)組織教學(xué)。學(xué)生的英語學(xué)習(xí)更是全面“服從”考試需要,他們對正常的英語課程提不起興趣,一門心思做參考題、復(fù)習(xí)題、模擬題、仿真題。
2.2大學(xué)英語教師和管理人員把四、六級考試作為評價大學(xué)公共英語教學(xué)的價值尺度,以考試成績好壞來衡量教學(xué)質(zhì)量的高低。政府主管部門在大學(xué)教學(xué)工作評價中把四、六級考試通過率作為重要指標(biāo),有的大學(xué)以教師任教班級學(xué)生的四、六級考試通過率來考核教師的教學(xué)業(yè)績,考核結(jié)果與教師的獎金、津貼掛鉤,有的把是否通過四、六級考試作為是否準(zhǔn)予學(xué)生畢業(yè)或能否獲得學(xué)位的一個“硬杠杠”。如此一來,大學(xué)公共英語教學(xué)只有唯四、六級考試是從,一切從考試出發(fā),一切為了通過考試。后果就是,四、六級考試大綱所要求的內(nèi)容掌握了,英語考試技巧提高了,但大學(xué)生的英語聽說能力、讀寫能力、翻譯能力、交際能力等并沒有多大提高①。
在這世紀(jì)之交的年代,科學(xué)技術(shù)飛速發(fā)展,無疑這種應(yīng)試型的大學(xué)英語教育遠(yuǎn)遠(yuǎn)滯后于時代的發(fā)展,不利于培養(yǎng)面向21世紀(jì)的新的復(fù)合型人才。我國外語界的許多有識之士早已認(rèn)識到大學(xué)英語四、六級考試中所存在的種種不足,并著手對其進行改革,以促進我國大學(xué)英語教學(xué)的健康發(fā)展。大學(xué)英語四、六級考試新題型的推出及采用就是這一勢在必行的改革的初步嘗試。
自1996年1月起,大學(xué)英語考試已正式啟用新題型,增加主觀題目的比例。語言測試的試題根據(jù)評分是否需要閱卷人員的主觀判斷而分為主觀題和客觀題。一般來說主觀題如作文等效度高,對教學(xué)的后效好,因此大學(xué)英語考試無論四級或六級都堅持采用一定比例的主觀題。自1996年1月起,已延續(xù)了十余年的全國大學(xué)英語四、六級考試的題型發(fā)生了顯著的變化,由偏重客觀試題轉(zhuǎn)向主、客觀題型合理搭配,重視考生主觀應(yīng)用能力的試題類型。目前已經(jīng)過研究和實驗并可逐步采用的新題型有翻譯、聽寫、簡答題。考試委員會還在積極開展其他新題型的研究。采用新題型的目的是更好地使考試為教學(xué)服務(wù),在可能的范圍內(nèi)增加主觀題的比例,使全國高校在教學(xué)中更加重視提高學(xué)生實際運用英語的能力。在采用新題型時盡量保持所考核的語言能力構(gòu)成基本不變、答題時間不變、各部分得分比例分配不變,以保證評價標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的穩(wěn)定性。例如1996年6月的四級考試,采用翻譯題型后,全國重點大學(xué)翻譯部分的均值為6.75分。這一部分用來取代原來的完形填空部分,而1995年6月全國重點大學(xué)完形填空部分的均值為6.72分。這說明采用新題型可以保持評價標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的穩(wěn)定性。此外,考試委員會還決定今后在考試大綱中列舉多種可能的題型,而在某次考試中具體采用何種題型則事先不予公布,以抵消應(yīng)試教學(xué)的心理壓力,使教師把更多的精力放在課堂教學(xué)上,提高學(xué)生實際運用英語的能力。此外,要探索對新題型進行等值處理的方法,保證大規(guī)模標(biāo)準(zhǔn)化考試評價標(biāo)準(zhǔn)的科學(xué)性,但等值處理是手段而不是目的,提高考試的效度是第一性的,通過考試正確地指導(dǎo)教學(xué)才是考試的根本目的②。為進一步推動我國大學(xué)英語教學(xué),適應(yīng)國家改革開放的需要,使大學(xué)生更加重視英語語言能力的學(xué)習(xí),獲得更強的參與國際交際的能力,經(jīng)教育部高等教育司批準(zhǔn),全國大學(xué)英語四、六級考試委員會自1999年初開始試行大學(xué)英語四、六級考試口語考試,并于1999年11月和2000年5月兩次擴大試點。總的來說,口試推動了大學(xué)英語課堂教學(xué)改革,有利于遏制應(yīng)試教學(xué)和片面追求單純通過率,使《教學(xué)大綱》規(guī)定的“培養(yǎng)學(xué)生具有較強的閱讀能力和一定的聽、說、寫、譯能力,使他們能用英語交流信息”這一教學(xué)目的的實現(xiàn)具有更扎實、可靠的基礎(chǔ)③。
3.改革大學(xué)英語教學(xué),全面提高學(xué)生英語語言能力
概括的說,大學(xué)公共英語教學(xué)必須在明確了正確的考教關(guān)系的同時,隨著四、六級考試的改革而改革,否則,不但將貽誤一屆又一屆的大學(xué)生,而且更為嚴(yán)重的是,在我國加入wto后面對更加開放、國際競爭更加激烈的環(huán)境,大學(xué)英語教學(xué)質(zhì)量問題可能使我們處于十分被動的境地。
隨著cet新題型的進一步推廣,我國大學(xué)英語教師將面臨著新的、更高要求的挑戰(zhàn),即如何運用行之有效的舊方法和研究新的方法來扎扎實實地提高我國大學(xué)生的英語交際能力,以滿足社會發(fā)展對我國英語教學(xué)改革提出的要求,以培養(yǎng)適應(yīng)社會發(fā)展所需求的綜合性全面發(fā)展的高素質(zhì)人才。大學(xué)英語四、六級考試題型的變化指引我們對近十余年我國大學(xué)英語教學(xué)展開反思,以便充分認(rèn)識其中的偏差和教訓(xùn),端正大學(xué)英語教學(xué)的指導(dǎo)思想,把握好大學(xué)英語教學(xué)的發(fā)展方向。“照本宣科”、以測試為目標(biāo)的教學(xué)法已經(jīng)跟不上時代的要求。教師在教學(xué)時,要采取多種手段激發(fā)學(xué)生的課堂積極性,善于引導(dǎo)他們進行聽、說、讀、寫、譯等各項技能的訓(xùn)練,培養(yǎng)他們在語言運用方面的能力。這使得教師要改變他們的教學(xué)方法,提高課堂教學(xué)質(zhì)量,同時也提高他們自身的語言能力和業(yè)務(wù)水平。
傳統(tǒng)教學(xué)中,課堂教學(xué)大都是由教師傳授知識,學(xué)生被動地吸收教師講的東西,成為存貯前人留下的知識的“容器”。這是不科學(xué)的。教師應(yīng)該變知識傳授為能力培養(yǎng),在教學(xué)中變教師的單向傳授為師生共同進行學(xué)習(xí)的雙向交流,使學(xué)生自己動腦、動口、動手學(xué)習(xí),從而使他們的能力得到培養(yǎng)。如何改革大學(xué)英語教學(xué),培養(yǎng)學(xué)生能力呢?
筆者概括出以下幾種策略:
3.1確立“以學(xué)生為中心”的觀念,改革填鴨式教學(xué)方式
應(yīng)惠蘭教授指出:“實際上外語學(xué)習(xí)的首要任務(wù)是‘學(xué)’而不是‘教’。”“教學(xué)方法應(yīng)該分為教法和學(xué)習(xí)方法兩個組成部分”。過去當(dāng)我們談到外語教學(xué)或教學(xué)方法時,過分強調(diào)了教師的指導(dǎo)作用,而忽視了學(xué)生的活動能力。認(rèn)知理論認(rèn)為,英語學(xué)習(xí)的過程就是新舊語言知識不斷結(jié)合的過程,也是語言能力從理論知識轉(zhuǎn)化為自動運用的過程。“以學(xué)生為中心的主題教學(xué)模式”正是遵循這種語言學(xué)習(xí)規(guī)律而創(chuàng)建的。英語是一門實踐課,語言技能的獲得是通過學(xué)生的實踐操練得來的。這就要求教師在教學(xué)過程中,以學(xué)生為中心,變學(xué)生被動接受為主動獲取知識。避免整堂課講授太多的語言點;避免給學(xué)生直接指出應(yīng)該注意什么;避免給學(xué)生詳細(xì)列出語言點的用法,而是應(yīng)該恰恰相反。老師能夠起到拋磚引玉的作用,如:課前讓學(xué)生預(yù)習(xí)課文,上課時先讓學(xué)生講解課文的大意,然后以問題辯論的形式對文章的主題、背景、寫作風(fēng)格、語言使用等方面展開討論。教師的講解是輔的、畫龍點睛式的。這樣,學(xué)生不僅掌握了語言點的用法,而且還學(xué)會了,并能夠很好地運用所學(xué)的知識。這樣就能主動調(diào)動學(xué)生學(xué)習(xí)的積極性,使其能夠主動參與,使課堂氣氛更活躍、更充實。同時,在當(dāng)今這個科技得以快速發(fā)展的時代,知識經(jīng)濟已經(jīng)成為各國發(fā)展的重中之重。教育也走向了市場,這無疑又給教育提供了有利的環(huán)境與促發(fā)的有利條件。在英語教學(xué)之中增加多媒體教學(xué)是轉(zhuǎn)變填鴨式教學(xué)的最好與最有效的途徑之一。通過多媒體教學(xué)不僅使學(xué)生的視野空間擴大,而更重要的是在學(xué)習(xí)、掌握基本知識的前提下使之達(dá)到運用語言知識的能力,不僅豐富了課堂,而且受益于學(xué)習(xí)者本身。教師對一些較難的課文還要進行一些系統(tǒng)的講解,以適合學(xué)生水平的需要。傳統(tǒng)的授課法是以單詞、語法分析為主體。但這樣一來,課文的內(nèi)容就被割裂了。語言知識很可能變成無本之木,學(xué)生興趣無從談起,積極性無從調(diào)動,結(jié)果事倍功半。教師講解課文的方式要以語篇教學(xué)為主,教師要把文章的信息結(jié)構(gòu),與文章有關(guān)的文化背景,文章的思想內(nèi)容和寫作風(fēng)格放在一個重要的地位上。要把語言知識、單詞的講解完全放在篇章內(nèi)容的整體講解過程中。這樣學(xué)生學(xué)到的就不是支離破碎的知識,而是從內(nèi)容到形式都齊備的活生生的語言。
3.2運用交際法進行教學(xué)
交際法(communicativeapproach)是以語言功能——意念項目為綱,培養(yǎng)交際能力的一種教學(xué)法。交際法創(chuàng)建于20世紀(jì)70年代初期的西歐共同體(eec),中心是英國。交際法重視教學(xué)大綱的研究。教學(xué)內(nèi)容以語言功能為綱,針對學(xué)習(xí)對象的不同需要加以安排。交際法強調(diào)教學(xué)過程交際化,排斥機械操練,讓學(xué)生在真實或接近真實的交際場景中操練,課堂教學(xué)活動應(yīng)模擬真實或近似真實的生活情景。
一方面,注意到各個單詞之間的各種系統(tǒng)內(nèi)關(guān)系的同時,還要把它置于句子乃至對話、語篇中呈示。如:角色表演法要求學(xué)生模仿課文對話表演,讓學(xué)生輪流到臺上表演。表演根據(jù)學(xué)生的水平,分層次提出不同的要求,讓學(xué)生覺得不難又需要做好準(zhǔn)備上臺表演。或者進行pairwork或groupwork。在表演中可以準(zhǔn)備實物道具,其中豐富的動作、表情都可以活躍課堂氣氛。此外,要使教學(xué)同真實世界(realworld)建立聯(lián)系,如用影視片段、多媒體等來實現(xiàn)單個詞匯或詞匯系列的輸入,讓學(xué)習(xí)者感覺生動、易學(xué)。對某些動詞如swing,snore等,還可以運用表情、動作和聲音來演示,其效果比單純以文字講解要好。利用多媒體直觀形象、生動活潑,讓學(xué)生自然而然地進入英語交際情境。如在課堂上播放英語經(jīng)典原版片,故事內(nèi)容學(xué)生已有所了解,加之畫面優(yōu)美,身臨其境,收到了出奇效果。不少同學(xué)能把影片中的部分英語對話模仿得惟妙惟肖,激發(fā)了學(xué)習(xí)的主動性和積極性,營造了良好的語言學(xué)習(xí)氛圍。
另一方面,要注意全面呈現(xiàn)詞匯的語用信息。像郵筒(pillarˉbox)在中國為綠色,在英國卻是紅色。這種信息必須提供給學(xué)習(xí)者,pillarˉbox這個詞暗含的社會文化信息同該詞的概念意義同等重要。此外,不少詞還具有一定文體意義和情感意義。尤其是具有褒義或貶義的詞,其情感意義是該呈現(xiàn)給學(xué)習(xí)者的。對于指黑人的兩個詞black與nigger,了解二者的概念意義而不知其情感意義顯然會影響交際運用①。前者帶有褒義,后者卻是貶義,這2種不同的情感意義同相應(yīng)詞語的概念意義一樣重要。內(nèi)含意義與情感意義因個體、文化、社會的不同而不同,教學(xué)主體亦要留心這一點。
3.3運用多媒體技術(shù)豐富和改善外語學(xué)習(xí)環(huán)境
多媒體軟件集聲、文、圖、像于一體,資料豐富、信息量大,其容量、使用功能、新穎程度為普通教科書所不及,在教學(xué)中顯得十分方便。先進的多媒體設(shè)備可使學(xué)生在課堂上能夠充分利用其視覺及聽覺器官,緊緊跟隨變化中的設(shè)備功能及富于色彩的影音材料,從而使注意力保持高度集中,提高了課堂學(xué)習(xí)的效率。這就擺脫了在以往的英語課堂教學(xué)中,學(xué)生視野中只有那一成不變的老師、黑板、講臺及教科書;聽覺中只有那過于熟悉甚至有些單調(diào)的老師的嗓音,因而經(jīng)常只聽不看或只看不聽,容易走神,心不在焉。總體來說,多媒體輔助英語教學(xué)在改善學(xué)習(xí)者的學(xué)習(xí)行為和學(xué)習(xí)態(tài)度方面優(yōu)勢明顯。具體體現(xiàn)在如下六個方面:(1)學(xué)生的個體差異得到兼顧;(2)學(xué)生的獨立自學(xué)能力得以鍛煉;(3)輕松愉快的學(xué)習(xí)環(huán)境得到保證;(4)地道的語音語調(diào)給學(xué)生提供了良好的模仿模式;(5)新穎活潑的教學(xué)形式和豐富的內(nèi)容能夠激發(fā)學(xué)習(xí)者極大的學(xué)習(xí)興趣;(6)視聽說各感覺器官積極配合,左右腦并用,提高了學(xué)習(xí)效率②。

Typhoons (臺風(fēng)) in the northern part of the world have girls' names. Sometimes they have very beautiful names. Rose is a pretty name but there was nothing pretty about Typhoon Rose. It was the worst typhoon to hit Hong Kong in ten years.
